Data centre and computing centre power testing

Commissioning and annual maintenance testing for data centre and computing centre power systems: generator load runs, UPS capacity verification and full-load temperature rise on busway and distribution, with resistive, inductive and capacitive loading.

Ключевые требования к испытаниям

  • Full-load proof of the whole power chain without touching IT load
  • Capacitive loading to represent modern server power supplies
  • Multiple banks paralleled for stepped loading into the megawatt range
  • Remote network control with automatic report archiving

Why full-load testing is required

A data centre's power system almost never runs at its design point: standby gensets spend years lightly loaded. Long periods of low load cause wet stacking, carbon build-up and falling efficiency, and when the utility does fail the set may not reach rated output. A periodic full-load test is the only way to find that before it matters.

Uptime Institute Tier certification, ANSI/NETA ATS acceptance specifications and most insurance policies all require load test records at handover and at annual maintenance. A load bank lets you produce them without putting live IT load at risk.

What the test programme covers

A typical acceptance programme covers stepped genset loading at 25/50/75/100% plus a continuous full-load temperature-rise run; ATS and STS transfer time with transient voltage checks; UPS full-load discharge capacity and battery autonomy; busway and switchgear temperature rise with infrared survey; and a failover rehearsal of the complete A/B system.

Capacitive loading is not optional

Modern server supplies use PFC front-ends and at light load the aggregate behaves capacitively. Capacitive load pushes an alternator toward under-excitation, which can trip loss-of-field protection or set off voltage oscillation — behaviour a purely resistive test can never reveal. LANDI RLC load banks provide resistive, inductive and capacitive loading so the real power-factor conditions of the hall can be reproduced.

Deploying on site

Where floor space inside the hall is tight, rack-mounted and wall-mounted banks connect directly at the row PDU or final distribution. Megawatt-class generator testing in the yard usually uses containerised banks with their own airflow path and weather protection, moved by trailer. All form factors support remote network control and parallel operation from a single terminal.
